On March 15, 2019, Hoi An Traditional Medicine Museum officially opened to welcome visitors. The museum is located in an ancient house with traditional Hoi An townhouse architectural style. Currently, the Museum displays more than 200 artifacts and supporting documents related to traditional medicine in general and medicine in Hoi An in particular. This is a place to preserve, display and introduce the historical development of Vietnamese traditional medicine. Coming to the museum, visitors will learn about healing methods, traditional medical tools and historical stories related to the medical profession. The museum has 3 main spaces:

  • The first floor recreates the space of a traditional Chinese medicine shop in Hoi An with areas displaying medicine cabinets, a place to take pulses, etc.
  • The courtyard recreates the scene of drying and preserving medicine. The back room recreates scenes of processing some types of medicine.
  • On the 2nd floor, the front room introduces the Vietnamese medical profession, the medical profession of Quang Nam and Hoi An, the museum’s tool and equipment warehouse, and the back room is the information and documentation room.

Hoi An Traditional Medicine Museum displays nearly 200 original artifacts and a number of restored artifacts, as well as supporting documents related to traditional medicine in general and the medical profession in Hoi An in particular. The museum is divided into 6 display rooms, vividly recreating the history of Vietnamese medicine from ancient times to the present. Visitors will be able to admire precious artifacts.

The main exhibition areas of the museum

  • Medical History Area: In this area, visitors will learn about the historical development of the medical profession from ancient times to modern times. Artifacts on display include books, documents and traditional medical instruments.
  • Traditional Medicine Instruments Area: This is the place to display medical instruments used in traditional medicine such as acupuncture needles, medicinal pots, herbs and many other items.
